چکیده

Pen-based computing has and continues to become accepted and increasingly used. Hardware and software vendors have typically stored and represented digital ink using proprietary or restrictive ink formats, and have provided software development toolkits to access or manipulate ink for user development on their devices. The variety of digital ink formats and device-dependent software toolkits has limited the ink exchange and application among heterogeneous devices. Our objective is to explore the interoperability of pen computing among heterogeneous devices and digital ink formats. Our investigation has two aspects: digital ink formats and pen computing application programming interfaces (APIs). We consider three ink formats: UNIPEN, Jot and InkML, and two ink APIs: the IBM CrossPad API and the Microsoft Tablet PC API. Our objectives are twofold: (1) to accomplish conversions among UNIPEN, Jot and InkML; (2) and to develop a common abstract API for the CrossPad and the Tablet PC. In this thesis, the issues in conversion among three ink formats are discussed, and the conversion between UNIPEN and Jot is implemented. We also identify the incompatibilities between the CrossPad API and the Tablet PC API. The design of an abstract API is described, and a partial implementation is complete.

Representation, Recognition and Collaboration with Digital Ink

Pen input for computing devices is now widespread, providing a promising interaction mechanism for many purposes. Nevertheless, the diverse nature of digital ink and varied application domains still present many challenges. First, the sampling rate and resolution of pen-based devices keep improving, making input data more costly to process and store. At the same time, existing applications typi...

Recognition of Sequence of Print and Ink Strokes: Investigation the Effect of Handwriting Pressure, Hue of Ink, Printer and Paper Type

By introducing of digital techniques, forensic document examiners has been encouraged to work with better accuracy in non-destructive ways. The aim of this study was to present a non-destructive, accessible, economic (affordable), user friendly, portable, useful and easy technique for specifying the order of crossing lines of ink stroke and printed text. The intersections of LaserJet and In...

Sharing Digital Ink in Heterogeneous Collaborative Environments

We present techniques that allow sharing of standardized digital ink in a heterogeneous collaborative environment. We explore the use of W3C InkML (Digital Ink Markup Language) and show how it is more flexible and suitable than other digital ink formats for this purpose. We discuss different possible digital ink sharing schemes using InkML and describe pros and disadvantages of each. We present...

Creation , Presentation , Capture , and Replay of Freehand Writings in e - Lecture Scenarios

Modelling freehand writing in all its capacitive expressiveness and stylised apotheosis is highlighted in this paper. We derive the necessary requirements for freehand writing representation from observations made in e-learning scenarios where the representation of ink data describing the dynamics of freehand writings as natural parameters is useful. We show that random real-time access for rec...

DIZI: A Digital Ink Zooming Interface for Document Annotation

Pen computing devices provide a natural interface for annotating documents with freeform digital ink. However, digital ink annotations are usually larger and sloppier than real ink annotations on paper. We present DIZI, a focus+context interface that zooms up a region of the underlying document for inking. Users write in the zoomed region at a comfortable size for the device. When the zoom regi...
